About Golden Temple

The Golden Temple, situated in Amritsar, in the north Indian state of Punjab, is the holiest shrine of the Sikh religion. Sikhs from all over the world journey to Amritsar, India to visit this holy place of pilgrimage. Known among the Sikhs as the Durbar Sahib, this holy shrine, its architecture, symbolism and religious significance, are deeply rooted in the history and traditions of Sikhism as it grew and flourished in India before spreading across the world.

The Sikh Guru, Guru Amar Das began the construction of the Golden Temple and in his lifetime the holy city of Amritsar developed into an important town in north India. The next Guru, Guru Ram Das, began the construction of the holy lake that surrounds the temple. Guru Arjan Dev conceived the sanctum sanctorum or Harmandir Sahib, which stands today as a hallowed symbol of the Sikh faith in India and across the world. The holy book of the Sikhs, the Guru Granth Sahib was given pride of place in the Harmandir Saheb in 1604. The gurudwara and the holy book are the core of Sikhism, revered by Sikhs worldwide. The journey to Amritsar, India and this holy site is undertaken by religious Sikhs to reaffirm their faith in the holy book and the teachings of the gurus.

During the reign of the great Sikh King Maharaja Ranjit Singh, the shrine grew in wealth and importance. The golden Temple stands today, a proud monument symbolizing the religious faith of the Sikh community in India and worldwide.

Tourist Places to See/Visit Near Golden Temple

Jalianwala Bagh : Famous for the massacre by General Dyer during British rule, Jalianwala Bagh today is visited by several tourists in Punjab. Located near the Golden Temple, it saw series of bullet shots and blood shed on the day of Baishakhi on 13 April, 1919 when under the supervision of General Dyer, hundreds of unarmed Indian men, women and children were shot without warning. Today Jalianwala Bagh has become a tourist center but you can still see the marks of bullet on the wall.

Durgiana Mandir : Durgiana Mandir is a pilgrimage center for many Indians. Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya laid the foundation of this stone temple in 1924 on Ganga Dashmi day. This temple is a place of worship of Durga, Laxmi and Narayan.

Baba Atal Rai Tower : It is believed that Guru Hargovind breathed his last here and this has contributed to its importance. This building is nine storied and the high class architectural work makes it very beautiful. It is definitely a pilgrimage spot but tourists visit the tower for a casual hangout as well.

Wagah Border : The retreat ceremony during sunset is the main reason for tourists to visit the Wagah Border. Bordering India and Pakistan, armed soldiers in a parade lower the flag and close the gate. The event takes place in the evening and you can see people from both the country shouting to boost up the energy and to cheer their nation.

Gurdwara Shaheed Ganj : A very beautiful and large Gurdwara of Shaheed Baba Deep Singh Ji outside Chatiwind gate in Amritsar City. Baba Deep Singh Ji became martyr in 1817(1760 A.D.) after fighting for Sikh religion.

Gurdwara Chheharta Sahib : A very beautiful and famous Gurdwara Chheharta Sahib.

Mata Ka Mandir - Rani Ka Bagh : A grand old pious lady developed this Hindu temple situated at Rani ka Bagh, on the lines of holy shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi at Katra (Jammu), the temple draws crowds of devotees from far and near.

Golden Temple Tour Package

Day 01 : Arrive Delhi
Arrive Delhi and transfer to hotel. Afternoon half day visit to Gurudwara Sisganj, Gurudwara Bangla Sahib and Gurudwara Rakabganj. Overnight at hotel.

Day 02 : Delhi - Chandigarh - Parivar Vichhora - Anandpur Sahib - Chandigarh
Drive to Chandigarh (238 kms / 05 hours). Check in at hotel. Afternoon visit Parivar Vichorra ( 52 kms / 02 hrs ) and drive to Anandpur Sahib ( 30 kms / 01 hr ) -fortress temple situated on the left bank of the river Satluj founded by the ninth Sikh Guru, Guru Tegh Bahadur. It was here that the Sikh religion acquired its final military character. Drive back to Chandigarh. Overnight at hotel.

Day 03 : Chandigarh - Amritsar
Morning sightseeing tour of Chandigarh, visiting the Museum, High Court, Assembly Chamber and Rock Garden. Afternoon drive to Amrltsar (250 kms/06.50 hrs), situated on the north -western border of the country. The 400 years old city, founded by the fourth guru of the Sikhs, Guru Ramdas , has been the seat of the Sikh religion and culture from its very inception. It is renowned for the famous Golden Temple. Amritsar, literally -'Pool of Nectar' derives its name from the holy pond around the temple. The land for the pool was gifted by the Moghul Emperor Akbar. Check in at hotel on arrival. Overnight at hotel.

Day 04 : Amritsar - Tarn Taran - Gobindwal - Hazoor Sahib - Amritsar
Morning excursion to Tarn Taran (22 kms / 45 minutes), famous for a gurudwara standing on the side of a large tank and built in honour of Guru Arjun Dev. Lepers come from far -off places to have a dip in the tank, for it is believed that its water can help cure leprosy. Proceed to Gobindwal (23 kms /30 minutes) , a short run from Tarn Taran connected to the memory of Guru Amardas who lived there. A gurudwara built by the Guruji still stands there. Since no place was available for a tank, an underground 'Baoli' was constructed near the gurudwara with a flight of 84 steps leading to it. Continue onto Hazoor Sahib (10 kms / 15 minutes) , where the Samadhi (memorial) of the second Sikh guru, Guru Angad Dev ji , was built by Maharaja Ranjit Singh in 1815. Return to Amritsar. Afternoon visit the Golden Temple - built in the midst of the holy pool by Maharaja Ranjit Singh in 1803. It is also known as Darbar Sahib or Har Mandir Sahib. The dome of the temple is covered with an estimated 400 kgs of gold leaf, hence its popular name the 'Golden Temple'. The interiors of the temple, like wise, decorated by inlay work with delicate floral patterns are done with semi precious stones. Adjoining the pool is Akal Takht , established by the sixth Sikh guru, Guru Hargobind Singh. It is seat of the supreme head of the Sikh religious authority. Overnight at hotel.

Day 05 : Amritsar - Jalianwala Bagh - Baba Bakala - Waga Border - Amritsar
Morning visit Jailianwala Bagh ( 24 kms / 45 minutes) , the historic site where hundreds of innocent Indian men, women and children were massacred by British General Michael Dyer on April 13 , 1919. A memorial and garden have been created here as a national monument. Proceed to Baba Bakala ( 21 kms / 45 minutes) , a place associated with ninth Sikh Guru, Shri Tegh Bahadur, having a magnificent gurudwara where people gather in thousands on every "Amavas". An annual fair is held on Raksha Bandhan with about hundred thousand people visiting the place, commemorating the day when the ninth guru was located by his followers. Drive to Waga Border and watch parade and closing of border for the day. Return to Amritsar. Overnight at hotel.

Day 06 : Amritsar - Delhi
ransfer to railway station to connect fast train Shatabdi Express for Delhi. On arrival, assistance and transfer to hotel. Overnight at hotel.
